GLORY AND MAGICAL MOMENTS

It’s happening once again this year: the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester will both make Bolzano their summer home, transforming the city into the pulsating musical heart of Europe for a few weeks. These youth orchestras, both of which have become permanent fixtures on the international music scene to the extent that their absence is now unthinkable, stand for the idea of a Europe united in all its cultural diversity and are icons of excellence: more than 4,000 aspiring young musicians compete for a seat every year, and only the very best are engaged.

With Daniele Gatti and Gianandrea Noseda conducting and Frank Peter Zimmermann and Garrick Ohlsson as soloists, both orchestras will be performing key works from music history, such as Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, Gustav Mahler’s Seventh Symphony and Thus Spake Zarathustra by Richard Strauss. Ferruccio Busoni’s titanic though seldom-heard Piano Concerto, the finale of which will feature the Bressanone (Brixen) Men’s Choir is an absolute rarity to experience. Film music conjures up images ranging from Out of Africa to Cinema Paradiso, and Schubert’s Octet is at its best at Tea Time. The most exciting thing about these concerts, though, is their very special energy: this is not the trotting out of a tired old tour, but a highly sophisticated programme that has been meticulously developed over the course of many weeks and presented to the Bolzano audience after having performed at venues such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival and the London Proms. One can indeed speak of a redemptive moment that, after countless sectionals and full orchestra rehearsals, allows the masterpieces to shine as if newly born. In Bolzano, magical moments have been experienced time and time again – moments that have been rendered unforgettable for the many music fans who come from near and far. If you’d like to keep your finger on the pulse of music in Europe, don’t miss any of these concerts!
